Prescription Drugs - Abuse and Addiction - 2Units

Drugs on the street are no longer limited to illicit and illegal drugs, but to medications that are prescribed every day by family doctors. Unfortunately, the medications that were prescribed for the good of their patients, are being misused, overused, and even sold for profit. This course will assist the practitioner in identifying dynamics in patients that might indicate the misuse of or addiction to prescribed medications. Assessment and treatment modalities are also identified in this course.

Target Audience

This course is designed for healthcare providers. Specifically, it is designed for Licensed Professional Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, Chemical Dependency Counselors, Marriage and Family Therapists, Nurses, or any other healthcare provider that is likely to gain professionally from increased knowledge in the subject area. It is appropriate for any provider that is likely to come into contact with those dealing with issues related to the clinical topic in the course of practice.

Teaching Methods

  2. Understand and identify psychosocial factors associated with prescription drug abuse.
  3. Enhance understanding of health risks associated with prescription drug abuse.
  4. Demonstrate an enhanced understanding of efficacy in different treatment approaches.
  5. Correctly answer 70% of multiple choice questions on a quiz over the material.
